ABSTRACT

Introduction: Age-related macular degeneration constitutes a frequent cause of blindness or low vision in the older adult. The assessment of quality of life related to visual function is essential in these patients treated with Bevacizumab. Objective: To assess the quality of life in relation to visual function in patients with age-related macular degeneration treated with Bevacizumab, at the ICO "Ramón Pando Ferrer", from January 2019 to May 2021. Methods: Prospective longitudinal descriptive study. The sample was 52 patients and the NEI VFQ-25 questionnaire was applied before and after three doses of the intravitreal drug. Results: Female gender predominated, the most represented age group was 60 to 79 years, the most frequent systemic disease was hypertension and the most frequent ocular disease was cataract. Almost all patients gained more than two lines in the Snellen chart, 42.3 percent presented a gain of 3 lines or more. The result of most of the items explored by the test, as well as the total visual function is statistically significant. Conclusions: There was an improvement in quality of life relative to visual function in patients after being treated with Bevacizumab. There was no directly proportional relationship between improved post-treatment visual acuity and improvement in total visual function(AU)

ABSTRACT

Purpose: To assess vision?related quality of life (VrQoL) in cases with visual loss after ocular trauma (OT) or non?traumatic ocular disease (NTOD) using the National Eye Institute’s 25?Item Visual Function Questionnaire 25 (VFQ?25) and its association with visual disability % (VD%) based on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (RPwD) Act, 2016. Methods: This was a prospective observational study conducted among cases with ocular morbidity in either or both eyes with a visual acuity of ?6/24. VFQ?25 questionnaire was administered to measure QoL scores. Statistical analysis was done using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) version 23. P < 0.05 was taken as significant. Results: Eighty-eight respondents completed the questionnaire. Mean age of participants was 40.272 ± 9.35 years (range: 23–55 years). Forty?three (48.9%) and 45 (51.1%) participants had OT and NTOD, respectively. The most common cause was traumatic optic neuropathy (21.6%) followed by corneal causes (19.4%). Low visual QoL scores were reported in all the cases (57.52 ± 16.08). Between OT and NTOD, a significant difference in terms of age (P = 0.001) and general vision (P = 0.03) was seen. Lowest scores were for driving. Based on VD%, 77 cases had ?40 and the rest had >40% VD with a significant difference in overall mean scores (P = 0.03), specifically in domains of general vision (P = 0.00), near activities (P = 0.00), and driving (P = 0.007). QoL was decreased in each subscale of ?40%VD group, who faced the same predicament everywhere as by the cases with more disability. Conclusion: Ocular morbidity is associated with low QoL, predominantly in domains like general vision, near activities and driving. The RPwD Act leaves out a huge population with VD without any government benefits. One might need to consider other vision?related factors also to provide them with social, psychological, and employment benefits.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Purpose: This study set out to examine the impact of surgical treatment of senile cataract on visual acuity and quality of life in patients operated in a public teaching hospital. Methods: Prospective study including patients aged over 60 years with clinical indications for cataract surgery treated at a medical residency service. The National Eye Institute Visual Function Questionnaire 25 was applied. Corrected distance visual acuity was measured before and after cataract surgery. Correlations between National Eye Institute Visual Function Questionnaire 25 scores and corrected distance visual acuity were investigated. Surgeons in charge, and surgical complications were also reported. Results: A total of 69 patients (89 eyes) were enrolled in this study. Patients were submitted to unilateral (52) or bilateral (17) surgery. Mean patient age was 70.8 ± 7.3 (52 to 95) years. Mean preoperative and postoperative National Eye Institute Visual Function Questionnaire 25 scores were 77.4 ± 15.3 (25.7 to 98.2) and 89.7 ± 14.0 (28.2 to 100) respectively. The larger differences in National Eye Institute Visual Function Questionnaire 25 subscale scores were associated with general vision (from 34.4 to 48.6). Mean preoperative and postoperative corrected distance visual acuity were 0.7 ± 0.39 (0.3 to 1.3) LogMAR and 0.24 ± 0.19 (0.1 to 1.0) LogMAR respectively. Comparative analysis of preoperative and postoperative findings revealed significant (p<0.001) improvements in quality of life and corrected distance visual acuity. Most surgeries (70%, 74 eyes) were performed by surgeons in training. Comparative analysis between patients submitted to unilateral and bilateral surgery revealed significantly (p=0.016) larger visual acuity gains in patients requiring surgery in both eyes. However, questionnaire scores did not differ significantly (p=2.48). Complications were observed in 13 eyes (14.6%), posterior capsule tear being the most common. Even in these cases, total National Eye Institute Visual Function Questionnaire 25 scores and corrected distance visual acuity increased significantly (p<0.001). Conclusion: Cataract surgery performed in teaching hospital settings improved patient quality of life and visual acuity. Therefore, public health agencies should ensure access to cataract surgery.

ABSTRACT

@#Corneal disease is a common disease that causes blindness, and keratoplasty is the main method for the treatment of corneal blindness. Visual function examination alone cannot fully evaluate the impact of surgery on patients, while the vision-related quality of life scale covers all aspects of visual indicators, which can more comprehensively reflect the feelings of patients. In recent years, it has gradually become a common method to evaluate the therapeutic effect of keratoplasty. This paper briefly reviews the research progress of NEI-VFQ-25 scale in corneal transplantation in recent years.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT BACKGROUND: Exudative age-related macular degeneration (e-AMD) may cause severe central vision loss. Patients with e-AMD can experience difficulties in daily basic activities and suffer from psychological problems. Our aim was to assess quality of life (QoL) and anxiety and depression status among patients with e-AMD. DESIGN AND SETTING: Cross-sectional study in a state university. METHODS: We included 200 e-AMD patients and 120 age and gender-matched controls. We assessed QoL using the National Eye Institute Visual Functioning Questionnaire-25 (NEI-VFQ-25) and the Short Form (SF)-36 test; and anxiety and depression status using the Hospital Anxiety Depression Scales A and D (HADS-A and HADS-D). RESULTS: The mean ages in the e-AMD and control groups were 68.40 ± 9.8 and 66.31 ± 8.98, respectively. Visual acuity among e-AMD patients was 0.37 ± 0.31 and 0.39 ± 0.32 in the right and left eyes, respectively. The e-AMD patients performed significantly worse than the controls in NEI-VFQ-25 (P < 0.05 for all items). The proportions of e-AMD patients scoring higher than the cutoffs in HADS-A and HADS-D were significantly higher than among the controls (41.5% versus 12.5% and 63.5% versus 27.5%; P < 0.001). The e-AMD patients had significantly lower mean scores than the controls for each of the SF-36 QoL items (P < 0.001). The NEI-VFQ-25 scores were significantly lower among patients with bilateral e-AMD than among those with unilateral disease (P < 0.05 for all). The HADS scores were positively correlated with duration of e-AMD and patient age, but negatively with vision levels (P < 0.05 for all items). CONCLUSION: The e-AMD patients had higher depression and anxiety scores and lower QoL scores.

ABSTRACT

Background: Visual impairment is a phenomenon which plagues many a human being be it of any age. It occurs all the more when the concern is the geriatric population. They seem to face many difficulties in their day-to-day life when they suffer from visual ailments and when they go undiagnosed and undetected. Aim: The objectives of the study were to determine the socio-demographic characteristics, to assess the visual impairment of geriatric population and its association with various task oriented domains of daily visual functioning, emotional well-being and social functioning in a rural area of West Bengal. Material and methods: An analytical cross-sectional study was done by measurement of visual acuity by Snellen’s chart (for distance vision), Jaeger’s chart (for near vision), torch light examination, interview by visual function questionnaire and determination of socio-demographic and economic characteristics on 110 geriatric people equal to or greater than 60 years of age. Observations: 42 (38.2%) people had visual impairment. The number of females was higher than that of males. Most of the visual impairment was found in people over 70 years of age. Visual impairment was significantly associated with gender (4.765, 95% CI 1.614-14.067) and religion (4.031, 95% CI 1.011-16.075). It was also significantly associated with difficulty in near vision activities (0.280, 95% CI 0.112-0.700), limitations in social functioning (2.700, 95% CI 2.111-3.453), mental health symptoms (0.273, 95% CI 0.092-0.106) and role limitation (0.266, 95% CI 0.075-0.946). Conclusion: Visual impairment is quite prevalent in the geriatric population and it significantly impacts the daily visual functioning of the elderly population which demands further concern.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: To evaluate objectively the improvement level of a patient's visual function using the NEI-VFQ-25 questionnaire pre- and post-operatively and the OQAS results from the patient group who had the same corrected visual acuity pre- and post-operatively. METHODS: We examined and compared the NEI-VFQ-25 test, OSI, MTF cut-off, strehl ratio, OQAS, and width at 50% and 10% in 24 eyes of 24 patients who had cataract surgery between December 2011 and February 2012. The patients' corrected visual acuity in both eyes had no change (0.8 and 0.8) pre-operatively and 2 months post-operatively (1.0 and 1.0). RESULTS: The satisfaction level regarding the patients' visual function increased. The NEI-VFQ-25 test was 71.54 +/- 14.88 points pre-operatively and 85.70 +/- 6.17 points post-operatively. OSI decreased to 3.13 +/- 1.66 (OSI value) and 1.53 +/- 0.58 (OSI value), and MTF cut off value improved from 14.51 +/- 6.97 (C/deg) to 27.63 +/- 8.98 (C/deg). Strehl ratio was improved to 0.09 +/- 0.03 and 0.14 +/- 0.03, width at 50% improved to 8.44 +/- 3.73 and 4.52 +/- 1.90 and width at 10% improved to 35.30 +/- 15.22 and 18.04 +/- 8.87 pre- and post-operatively, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: The NEI-VFQ-25 test reflected the vision improvement in patients where after cataract surgery, determination of the visual function improvement only through vision would not be possible. In addition, the OQAS showed the quality of vision improved through quantified values.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: To translate and evaluate the reliability and validity of the Korean version of the National Eye Institute Visual Functioning Questionnaire-25 (NEI-VFQ-25). METHODS: Two bilingual ophthalmologists independently translated the original English version of the NEI-VFQ-25 into written Korean. A panel of the Korean Retina Society reviewed the translations to form a single reconciled forward translation of the Korean version of the NEI-VFQ-25. Another ophthalmologist back-translated this first draft into English. Both the first draft and back-translated draft were edited by a professional translator. To evaluate the correlation and validity, results between the original NEI-VFQ-25 and the Korean version, completed by the bilingual participants, were compared. RESULTS: The Korean version of the National Eye Institute Visual Functioning Questionnaire-25 was developed by translation, back-translation, and expert supervision. Results from 23 bilingual participants between the original NEI-VFQ-25 and the Korean version were compared and showed statistically significant correlation, with a Spearman's correlation coefficient of 0.4 or greater. The Kolmogorov-Smirnov test results showed no statistically significant differences between the two questionnaires. CONCLUSIONS: Translation and validation of the Korean version of the NEI-VFQ-25 was achieved.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: To determine the relationship between the American Medical Association's (AMA) functional vision score (FVS) and vision-specific quality of life in retinitis pigmentosa (RP) patients using the National Eye Institute's Visual Functioning Questionnaire (NEI-VFQ 25). METHODS: One hundred eight patients with RP participated in the study. We measured best-corrected visual acuity, conducted Goldmann perimetry, and collected the self-reported NEI-VFQ 25. The FVS was calculated using the functional field score (FFS) and the functional acuity score (FAS). The correlations of the VFQ composite scores to the FVS, FFS, and FAS were determined using correlation and regression analyses. RESULTS: FVS was highly correlated to the BCVA (r=0.69, p<0.001), the FFS (r=0.86, p<0.001) and the FAS (r=0.73, p<0.001). Significant correlations of the VFQ composite score to the BCVA (r=0.60, p<0.001), FFS (r=0.44, p<0.001), FAS (r=0.60, p<0.001), FVS (r=0.58, p<0.001) were also found. However, the correlation strengths of BCVA, FVS, FAS, and FFS to NEI-FVQ were not different. CONCLUSIONS: In RP patients, the vision-specific quality of life was correlated with the AMA guidelines' FVS, FFS, and FAS. Their correlation degrees to NEI-FVQ were not different. This result suggests that vision-specific quality of life can be explained by both visual acuity and visual field in RP patients.
